Gender Justice in STEM Research in Africa

A project comprising a network of women change-makers and male allies focused on tackling the underrepresentation of women in STEM

Our Goal

Creating pathways for gender justice in STEM research in Africa.

About Us

GeJuSTA is a multinational project seeking to tackle the problem of underrepresentation of women and the lack of gender analysis in STEM research. Our network has members from universities and NGOs based in Kenya, Uganda, Sweden, South Africa, Zambia, and the United Kingdom.

Achieving gender justice in STEM fields has remained problematic with much of the masculinist and colonialist concepts driving it. With a network of experienced academics, professionals, and other community partners, this project seeks to use a gender transformative approach, rooted in African feminism, ethics of care and ubuntu, to influence policy by identifying barriers and creatively diversifying the framing of STEM and STEA+M pedagogies.

“People ask me all the time: ‘What is it like to be a woman at Google?’ I’m not a woman at Google, I’m a geek at Google. And being a geek is just great. I’m a geek, I like to code, I even like to use spreadsheets when I cook.”

Marissa Mayer, Technologist and former CEO of Yahoo.
